The doctor charged with providing drugs that led to the death of 3 Doors Down guitarist Matt Roberts was acquitted on Monday.
Dr. Richard Snellgrove was found not guilty on 13 counts of unlawful distribution of drugs and health care fraud. Snellgrove had faced up to 240 years in prison and $2.8 million in fines if convicted.
Snellgrove’s lawyer, Dennis Knizley, tells AL.com that text messages introduced by the defense at trial showed that Roberts was seeking illegal drugs in addition to medications he got from Snellgrove, and that alone showed that the doctor couldn’t be blamed.
Snellgrove still faces a civil lawsuit filed by the Roberts estate in February. Roberts died in August 2016.
